Crowds flock to Burdekin Races

28 May, 2009 04:00 AM
WITH rumours circulating that this year's Burdekin Grower Race Meeting might be cut from the racing calendar, North Queenslanders turned out in their thousands as a show of support for this iconic event.

A crowd estimated to have exceeded 4000 flocked to the Home Hill race track to witness a great day of horse racing.

With a theme of 'Gallops, Glamour and Style', Burdekin locals graced the track in all manner of sartorial elegance- though for some like the group using the day as a bucks' party, elegant may be a bit strong.

Fashions on the field was as hotly contested as any of the horse races, and record nominations made the judging a difficult process.

The judging panel included celebrity television personality, Anthony Ikin from the much- lauded So You Think You Can Dance program.

But in a photo finish, the winners were Brittany Bohl, Milnery Award; Danielle Farry, Classic Ladies Wear; and Carmela Vasta, Cutting Edge Fashion.

The feature race, the Commercial Tavern Burdekin Cup, was won by Mackay galloper Captain Biggles with jockey Graham Kliese aboard, from Link Hogthrob, jockey J Felix, and Lion Brave ridden by D Missen.

The win gave Kliese his third for the day.

In the tradition of the Burdekin Grower Race Meeting, tonnes of produce was offered, which was distributed to racegoers at the end of the meeting, making even more of a meeting with a difference.
