CHARTERS Towers on Saturday had the biggest one day rodeo in the Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association (ABCRA) modern day history when 504 nominations competed in all forms of rodeo for both Juniors and seniors.
The Charters Towers committee were very happy with the turnout and with the nominations came an excellent crowd that saw the canteen and bar sell out.
President, Lance Naughton said he and the Committee were very happy with the crowd and the nominations.
“Our second rodeo later in the year will be boosted by the travelling New South Wales riders so we hope for those nomination numbers again,” he said.
“The rodeo went a lot longer than we expected finishing just on midnight but if we have those numbers again we will start at 10am in the morning instead of the 12 noon this time.”
Australian Barrel race Champion for 2008, Mareeba’s Jodie Williamson showed why she is the champ when she went around the barrels course in 16.40sec which was only .1 of a second better than second placed Cloncurry rider Suzie Fearon with a 16.50.
Selheim rider Deborah Johinke showed major improvement from last season to take third with a time of 16.844 while she just pipped the Australian Rookie Champion from 2008 Jaemi-Lee Krause who clocked 16.845.
With only .4 of second between these top four and several others capable of doing the same times the Women Barrels will be keenly contested this season.
