Mareeba rodeo stays strong

15 Jul, 2009 04:00 AM
V8 SUPERCARS, the Oak Park races and other major events in the north did little to stop locals and visitors turning up for the Mareeba Rodeo last weekend.

The crowd for the two days was down marginally but organisers are happy with the overall result.

New Secretary Tanya Piggott, running her first Show/Rodeo said the crowds were down by about 1000 on last year.

“Our nominations were up on last year and there were more grey nomads at the event this year,” she said.

Mareeba President Tom Blakney said the grey nomads are an integral part of the week of events.

“There are more and more of them coming each year,” he said.

Local Cowboy Michael Cordingley showed the visitors that consistency was what won titles when he came into the final of the steer wrestling back in 6th place but because he got a catch and time he came out the winner.

Cordingley was seeded top in the saddle bronc going into the final as well and a low scoring ride almost cost him the win there but he managed to take win by one point to take the steer wrestling-saddle bronc double and with that came the All-round Title as well. – Story and pictures: PETER GAGE, nqsport.net
