Bats over-run Mt Isa park

25 Jan, 2010 10:59 AM
THE southern half of Warrina Park at Lake Moondarra in Mt Isa has been closed for public safety due to an infestation of migratory bats.

The fruit bats carry a virus that is harmful to humans, and the park has been closed due to the large amount of urine and faeces produced by that bats that could potentially cause harm.

Mount Isa Water Board chief executive officer, Ian Pascoe, said the water board were looking for ways to move the bats on humanely under the guidance of the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency.

"The fruit bats are a protected species, so we're no allowed to harm or kill them," he said.

"We've been told that strobe lights and smoke may be effective in moving the bats on. This is the first time we've come across this problem."

Mr Pascoe stressed that people should not touch any bats they come across.

"People should be aware that there is a virus within fruit bat populations, and if there's any injured bats people shouldn't touch them," Mr Pascoe said.

Fruit bats are known to carry a variety of viruses, and government guidelines note that all bats should be assumed to be harmful. The most serious virus is Australian Bat Lyssavirus which can be fatal.

Anyone who is scratched or bitten by a bat should wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and seek urgent medical attention.

I'm confused about this comment in the story...."the large amount of urine and faeces produced by that bats that could potentially cause harm". Potentially cause harm to whom, those humans that eat it perhaps? This manure fertilises trees, and promotes forest growth. Without the flying foxes polinating night-flowering plants and providing free fertiliser, we wouldn't have any forest growth.
