Brisbane in a wheelie bin spin over mango glut

12 Jan, 2010 09:28 AM
BACKYARD mango trees shedding their tropical fruits this season are causing woes for Brisbane residents struggling to dispose of the glut.

The Brisbane City Council has refused to empty 16 suburban wheelie bins in the past week because they were overloaded with rotting mangoes.

One bin filled with mangoes weighed 170 kilograms - 100 kilograms more than the council limit.

Callers to Brisbane talkback radio this morning have complained about the mounting issue, with one southside woman telling ABC Radio as many as 60 mangoes have been falling from her backyard tree each night.

Residents in Paddington have also erected signs on the footpath, warning pedestrians of the dangers of the falling fruit, which typically weigh about 700 grams each for a large specimen.

The council says it is not acceptable to throw any more than several shopping bags worth of mangoes into household wheelie bins.

Bins must weigh no more than 70 kilograms and contain only general household rubbish.

"Even filling half a wheelie bin with the fruit is too much for a waste collection truck's arm to lift," a council spokeswoman said.

Instead, the council is urging residents to use waste vouchers, which come with quarterly rates notices, to dispose of the fruit at the tip.

It has also advised residents to hire a skip if necessary to dispose of their pickings.
