FIFO workers needed for meatworks

23 Feb, 2012 04:00 AM
A POTENTIAL Cloncurry abattoir could rely largely on fly in fly out workers.

Cattle industry lobby group North Beef chairman Rob Atkinson said it would be a solution to the skills shortage which has drained non-mining industries in the North West of workers.

"The mining industry has FIFO workers and camp style accommodation and that's something we'll certainly have to look at doing ourselves," he said.

"Labour is a very big issue for us."

Councillor Daniels agreed FIFO slaughtermen could be necessary.

"Workforce is the only downfall," he said.

"I think we'd have to source the workers from another country.

"What I'd like to see happen is we source 200 families and have it so if we set them up here to live they'll give us a guarantee of five years of work and we won't have to worry about them jig-jogging over to mines."
