Heytesbury takes stance on cattle killings

03 Jun, 2011 10:08 AM
The giant Heytesbury Beef cattle company owned by the Holmes à Court family has warned it will not sell its cattle to Indonesia again if the country cannot stop inhumane practices in its abattoirs.

The warning follows the federal government placing a temporary ban on live exports to 11 of 120 Indonesian abattoirs this week following the broadcast of disturbing footage of Indonesian slaughterhouses, The Australian Financial Review .

"Profits are not an excuse for an animal to be treated that way," said Heytesbury chief executive Paul Holmes à Court, who oversees the export of more than 30,000 live cattle to Indonesia each year.

"I have advised all of our customers that we will never sell another beast to them again unless they provide a guarantee that our cattle will be stunned before being killed."

While I agree with the general principle. Referred to the Labor government's boat people policy.

Then think about all potential consequences and outcomes, before making feelgood announcements.

I personally have know this to be the CEO's politicly since early 2000's. It is Importers that import the live cattle NOT the meat works however, this should be the focus on who imports and sells in what market in the landed area. d

I love the beginning of this article. It was a stance for the right and the just. A defence for the undefended. Then it ended with "we will never sell another beast to them again unless they provide a guarantee that our cattle will be stunned before being killed."

They may give you a guarantee but they will not carry it out as they do not concider that animals have feelings. So very sad.
