NT pain remains over live cattle export ban

25 Jan, 2012 08:21 AM
NORTHERN Territory Opposition Leader Terry Mills says the impacts of the Gillard Government's blanket ban on live beef exports are still being felt in both Indonesia and Australia.

Mr Mills said during a series of meetings in Indonesia last week it was made very clear the Federal Government had been foolish to underestimate the resilience of the Indonesian people.

"The view from Indonesia expressed by senior journalists, former ministers, the Chamber of Commerce and serving politicians was that the blanket ban was a stupid decision that would be counter-productive to Australia and serve to strengthen Indonesia," Mr Mills said in his media statement.

"The effect of the ban was to interrupt Indonesian beef supplies in the short term, but in the long term raised the issue of food security.

"Until the blanket ban, self sufficiency was seen as an aspirational goal. Now it is becoming a key national objective.

"In the future I predict Indonesia will move away from dependence on large feedlot operators in favour of measures to increase the spread of the herd to small farmers across the archipelago."

Mr Mills said one measure being discussed ws the improvement of internal transportation to boost market access.

"Currently, economies of scale favor large shipments from Australia, but Indonesia is aiming to reduce the cost of internal transportation, which will benefit small herd owners across Indonesia," Mr Mills said.

"The Federal Government should undo some of the damage the blanket ban caused by committing to closer relationships with Indonesia at the highest levels.

"The Territory can benefit from Indonesia's desire to become self-sufficient in beef production by sharing experience and expertise through training support and assistance and supplying the younger cattle that will be required to achieve this goal.

"In establishing a proactive working relationship with Indonesia, the Territory will be well positioned to top up Indonesia's beef supply because its consumption is still increasing."

Put your time , effort and money into a shrinking market to help it become a non existent market even sooner? That makes sense. Apologies, you're talking about tax payer money to prop up this industry again aren't you?

This, to build trade relations with a country that Australian's give more than half a billion dollars to in foreign aid every year, for no thanks . That's something to strive for?

Mr Mills, there is an adage about people who live in glass houses and it appears they may be throwing stones. Part of your duty is to make sure that we don't get hit by them.

@Real Deal, the subsequent damage brought about by a useless minister who couldn't be bothered to recognise facts until for many it was too late will send shock waves through Australia’s rural community for years to come.

Now that Gov has been forced to view the reality of the situation, they realise the alternatives to export are unrealistic and will require far more taxpayer input for an infinite amount of time.

Mr Mills lives in the NT and glass or no glass, cattle production is a major part of their economy with countless families, businesses and communities that rely on it.

Are the public really to be concerned by holes in the bank accounts of live exporters after seeing the bloody atrocities being committed on animals sent to Indonesia - as seen on Four Corners last year? Spare me! The "damage" was done by our government failing these animals abysmally, and their total lack of accountability. We have government ministers paid well to do the job of protecting our animals, and producers. They were all betrayed and were left exposed to whistle-blowers. The live export trade was withholding very dirty and cruel secrets something that must never happen again.
