Web portal opens door to top genetics

31 May, 2009 04:00 AM
AUSTRALIA'S top quality beef genetics are now being marketed worldwide, thanks to a new web portal for the tropical livestock genetics sector.

The web portal was developed by Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries in collaboration with industry as part of a long-term marketing strategy to boost Australia's livestock genetics exports.

Minister for Primary Industries, Tim Mulherin, said it was a significant step forward in the marketing of Australia's livestock products.

"Queensland has a strong reputation for high quality livestock genetics, however until now there has been no coordinated promotion of tropical genetics or a centralised point for accessing information and contacts," Mr Mulherin said.

"Thanks to this web portal, no matter where you are in the world, information and business communications can now be conducted effectively online through this portal.

"We currently export $2.6 billion in beef commodities to more than 100 countries, but to compete in livestock genetics exports we need to improve our marketing.

"The new website will now direct local and international buyers to specific information on Australia's tropical livestock industry, breeds and advantages," he said.

Ms Bligh said that the new website also provided a contact point for international buyers interested in partnering with Queensland livestock genetics producers, with a range of key industry contacts listed.

"Potential importers and exporters can better plan their business with tips provided on how to source and import genetics from Australia," she said.

Mr Mulherin said he was confident that the capacity of this web portal to create commercial opportunities will be further developed by industry when it takes ownership of the portal later this year.

The advantages of Australia's tropical livestock genetics are:

  • Australia is free from all "List A" diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease, BSE, and Brucellosis and is thus the obvious choice as a source of healthy, quality livestock.

  • Livestock genetics are available for a wide range of climatic conditions and therefore suitable to a wide range of importing country environments.
  • Genetics can be provided from a large range of tropical breeds many with bloodlines of great interest internationally.
  • Cattle are available from large herds where effective selection has been practiced for many generations.
  • Australia is a world leader in research into genetics technologies.
  • Australia has an advanced genetic evaluation systems for beef cattle Breedplan and can therefore offer herd-improving genetics to overseas buyers.
  • Pedigrees of Australia cattle are recorded on the world's leading breed registry software making them readily accepted internationally.
  • A high level of practical and technical support is available in Australia for buyers from importing countries.
