Bligh needs to push for roo exports: Johnson

15 Oct, 2009 12:12 PM
MEMBER for Gregory Vaughan Johnson has welcomed Premier Anna Bligh's current trade mission to Russia, and trusts gains will be made to reactivate imports of kangaroo meat to that country.

Mr Johnson said he'd written to the Premier last week urging her to make the highest representations possible during her visit to push for the reopening of the market.

"Russia is a vital market for our kangaroo meat exports and we need to assure Russian officials that the industry is working with our State and federal health and quarantine officials to ensure our kangaroo product is safe and of the highest health standards," Mr Johnson said.

Mr Johnson said he was working with Federal Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott, who had also made representations to Federal Agriculture Minister Tony Burke to get support for full-time professionals in the western kangaroo industry who had been hit hard by the Russian ban, which was causing them considerable financial stress.

"These are small business people who have been making a vital contribution to our western towns and regional economies," Mr Johnson said.

"We need to ensure that they can remain in the regions until this ban is lifted and the industry can return to harvesting safe product and generating vital income."

Mr Johnson said he had also written to Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin urging him to work with Tony Burke to provide assistance to the full-time professionals in Queensland in their time of need.

"Let's all hope the Premier's trip is a success in assuring the Russians our kangaroo industry is determined to meet the health standards required and the market can be reopened as quickly as possible."

Mr Johnson said if the Russian market could be reopened quickly, it would send an important message to potential customers in the EU and China that Queensland and Australia were genuine about meeting the health standards of all markets.

Mr Johnson urged all industry sectors to participate in the wild game harvester forums on Tuesday, October 27, at Longreach Civic Centre, 4pm-6.30pm; and Wednes-day, October 28, at Charleville Raceview Complex, 4pm-6.30pm.

Shooters go out at night, in the heat and dust, and kill these animals – presumably getting them “humanely” with a heat shot. But this is usually not the case. Many are shot at and go away to die in agony. The sick ones are more likely to be shot. Our native animals are stress-prone and the terror must be horrific for them. About 440,000 joeys are just dragged out of their pouches to be bludgeoned to death or decapitated. It is not a "humane" industry! Processors can carry very little water and the bodies are not checked until much later when they are boned. Why should Russia eat this meat? Are chillers to follow the kill? This would make the costs soar, and be impractical. Does Anna Bligh ever listen to people? How dare she goes as our leader, on taxpayers' money, to Russia an undo all the reports and negotiations done by animal activists! The arguments of "jobs" and "economic benefits" to justify environmental vandalism and animal exploitation is becoming tiresome!

I've got news for Anna Bligh and her trade mission to Russia trying to convince them to lift their ban on kangaroo meat. Doesn't she know our kangaroos are on the brink of extinction and this mission if successful will only push them over the edge into the abyss? Even seasoned shooters are saying that kangaroos are being hunted to extinction. Government data shows that Australia-wide kangaroo numbers are down 75 percent since 2003, with populations reduced to unsustainable levels. Alarm bells should be ringing now! Those who advocate killing our kangaroos do so out of ignorance, apathy and greed, but they forget Australia will be the poorer as a nation when these beautiful marsupials have vanished from the landscape. Remember extinction is forever.

Good one Kathleen! People get too worked up about the kangaroo debate, it's about time someone injected a bit of humour into it. That's the best laugh I've had for weeks.
