New training key to re-opening Russian 'roo market

New training key to re-opening Russian 'roo market

10 Feb, 2010 03:37 PM
The Federal Government is allocating an additional $400,000 to help train workers in the kangaroo industry.

Minister for Agriculture, Tony Burke, said the funds would help the 4000 people employed within the kangaroo industry to meet "the increasingly stringent quality demanded by importing countries".

The funding will be used to extend the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation’s current kangaroo harvester training program.

The additional funds will be used to accelerate training delivery, update and enhance training materials, develop a competency-based qualification and on-the-job assessment framework to facilitate ongoing training, and retrain and assess skills and knowledge of harvesters

"Investing in product and skills improvement is essential for regaining access to the market in Russia as well as underpinning new markets, such as China," Mr Burke said.

"This training will ensure that kangaroo harvesters have the skills to meet international requirements and changing market conditions."

A key part of the training will be the inclusion of a practical skills assessment where harvesters will need to demonstrate their competency through one of a number of assessment methods, such as an on-the-job demonstration.

This is a very sad day for Australia. There are many activists who have worked hard to make Russia realise the brutality and unhealthiness of this nasty and horrific slaughter of wildlife. Tony Burke must be congratulating himself, and he will be responsible for the bloodshed and the millions of joeys that will be bashed to death without mercy! Money spent on "processors" should have been on re-training on alternative industries, not on Australia's horrific mass wildlife slaughter - the largest of terrestrial wildlife in the world. China's billions will soon eat their way through kangaroos. Nothing is sustainable, despite regulations and quotas - proved by the fishing industries!

Tony Burke obviously has no interest whatsoever in the welfare of any animal whether it be a kangaroo or a live exported farm animal. It seems that animal cruelty is of no concern to this uncaring and greedy person.

Tony Burke should hide his head in shame, propping up this barbaric kangaroo industry with a $400.000 boost.Doesn't he know even seasoned kangaroo shooters are saying there should be a halt to the shooting as there are very few kangaroos left in the commercial killing zones? It appears Tony Burke has no concern or feeling for these beautiful marsupials and won't be satisfied until he has pushed them over the brink into extinction. He should be promoting Eco-tourism,which has the potential to generate far greater long-term benefits to Australia's economy than slaughtering our wildlife, kangaroos and their joeys for short-term gain.

Vivienne, Barker & Kathleen, Congratulations on your perseverance for tainting a subject that is well in balance. Tony Burke is doing the right thing! When will "well meaning" people like yourselves go out and have a look at the real industry instead of honing in a few rebels which every industry has? People who do the wrong thing should be penalized - however those who do the right thing should be encouraged to do so. Go back to your "green masters" and tell them to have a real look - and cut out this total BS - Propaganda - The people in the Bush have had enough - don't push us any further - we are not going to take it! It is a fact that every time real hard working Aussies try to do the right thing the over the top conservationist get up on their soap boxes and sprout highly emotive scenes without a balance - just STOP!!
