LOOK out Kostya Tszyu- the boys from the Gulf Savannah are in training and if enthusiasm has anything to do with success we’re likely to see quite a few new boxing heroes emerge in the coming months.
Five times Queensland boxing champion, Damien Farrell, has formed a Savannah sporting team which is already in training for a boxing spectacular to be held in conjunction with the Georgetown Battle of the Bulls on August 29.
There will be 10 bouts of four, 2 minute rounds with the main bout being a title fight for the Gulf of Carpentaria Battle of the Bulls title.
Damien saw a need to give the young people of the Gulf Savannah a positive focus and has set up the Savannah Sporting Team focussing on boxing training.
The area covered is from Mt Garnet to Normanton and training sessions will be held weekly beginning with Georgetown on Monday and Wednesday evenings, Croydon Tuesday, Mt Surprise Thursday, and the Oasis at Lynd Junction on Friday. Mt Garnet and Normanton dates are still to be finalised.
After just two weeks of setting up the team there are already 27 young boxers in training and indications are that that number will swell to around 100 as the Georgetown Battle of the Bulls approaches.
