Lydon prepped to drive hard

LYDON Dodge, 22, has been around motorsport for as long as he can remember and this weekend he will be competing in the biggest karting event of his career, the 47th National Sprint Kart Championships sponsored by Yamaha in Townsville this coming weekend, April 10 – 12.

The National Championships has attracted almost 300 competitors from every region of the country and Dodge is aiming for the top in his fourth attempt at a National crown.

“The National Championships is the pinnacle of karting in Australia, you have got the best of the best from everywhere coming to try and be number one,” Dodge said.

“It is this type of competition that makes the sport so great, the is no point racing unless there is good competition, the biggest thrill is knowing that you have beaten the best there is.”

Dodge’s best result in a National Championship is a ninth placing when the event was held in Sydney two years ago but with the benefit of having a good knowledge of the Townsville circuit he believes that he is in with a good shot this year.

“Townsville is a good track, it’s going to be very fast with a number of tight sections which present some good passing opportunities. I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.

Dodge will be joined on track at the championships by his younger brother, John Underwood, who has just moved into the Junior ranks and using the event to gain further experience while enjoying his time behind the wheel.

It is this type of experience that Dodge believes assisted him when obtaining his road licence.

“As a kid growing up racing karts it is a great way of being able to get confidence behind the wheel and learn a lot about car control and driving techniques,” Dodge said.

“When I went for my driver’s licence I wasn’t nervous at all. The experience that I had gained while racing karts ensured that I was more aware of my surroundings and could judge things a lot better while leaving the racing to the track.”

Dodge will head to Townsville next week to begin practice for the championships ahead of official qualifying on Friday April 10. Heat races will be held on Saturday April 11 with the Championship Finals to be contested on Sunday April 12.
