Cattleman Camm buys Lolworth for $15m

22 Mar, 2010 09:02 AM
CATTLEMAN Peter Camm has snapped up Lolworth Station, north-west of Charters Towers, Queensland, for $15 million.

Mr Camm is known for his $72.5 million sale of La Belle and Welltree cattle stations in the Northern Territory and the purchase of Chudleigh Park in north Queensland for $28 million from the receivers of Great Southern.

Lolworth covers about 35,000 hectares of high-quality grazing country.

The purchase includes about 7000 head of cattle and high-grade infrastructure.

Ray White Rural selling agent Kevin Curry negotiated the off-market transaction in just a few weeks.

"Peter Camm saw this as an ideal place to relocate his headquarters since divesting his interests in the Northern Territory," he said.

Mr Camm is believed to be running a total herd of about 50,000 head of cattle. Neither he nor the vendor were available for comment.

My ancestral relatives Frank and William Hann and their parents Elizabeth and Joseph Hann ran Lolworth Station in the 1860s! I believe they were the first to set up there at Lolworth, altho that may not be right. Do any of your readers know where the original farm Lolworth was (I thought somewhere in Wiltshire UK), after which the Oz property was named by Joseph? I believe Lolworth was the farm his father and mother Hugh and Mary Hann ran during the 1830s, in either Wiltshire or Somerset. I have not been able to locate it myself in any searches I have tried (including Googling it just now!) Hugh Hann was a brother to my great-great-great-grandfather George Brown Hann. Almost certainly Joseph would have known my great grandfather Asher Hann and his brother Ferdinand Bond Brown Shorland Hann, who both lived in Emerald Hill, Melbourne, in the 1850s, when Jospeh and Elizabeth ran Coolort Estate at Westernport. Ferdinand had 7,000 acres in partnership with two others at Langwarren on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. In 1866 Asher began importing meat carcasses into Adelaide. He built a hotel in Adelaide's CBD, where he and his wife Mary lived until returning to Melbourne in the 1880s

adrian,

Lolworth was named in tribute to the business partner Richard Daintree.

Lolworth was the name of Richards family home in Hemingford, Hertfordshire.

I am surprised to read your accurate report on the Hann family. You must belong to either fred or Asher's side of the family. Am I right?

I worked as Jilleroo on Lolworth Station back in the early 70's under ownership of Don Anning and his brother owned Reedy Springs.
