SUGAR industry advisers from Bundaberg to Mossman met in Townsville last week to undertake training to become Fertcare advisers. The training seminar was organised by Back Paddock, an agricultural consultancy company.
The company has worked as the main contractor in the development of the national fertiliser accreditation program and now specialises in training
New legislation requires that fertiliser programs now have to be based on a soil test.
Fertcare is a national adviser-accreditation program that is designed to train advisers to interpret the soil test and create a fertiliser program to meet soil requirements and legislation.
A variety of industry representatives attended the conference including representatives from the Bureau of Sugar Ex-periment Stations (BSES), rural resellers and mill productivity services advisers.
Back Paddock representative Tom Cowlrick said the course would be of great benefit to par-ticipants.
"It will allow them to have an understanding not only of the nutrient status but other soil factors that affect the plant like acidity and salinity," Mr Cowlrick said. "The course will give them a full understanding of the soil and the things that affect plant growth.
"It is also about understanding environmental risks associated with fertiliser."
