Rick sings for his sugar

FOR one Ayr cane farmer, singing Italian opera while toiling in the cane fields is a daily task.

Come weekend, this farmer, Rick Romeo (pictured), is often busy travelling around Queensland or NSW, performing with seven other actors in a group called Attori.

Attori, which is Italian for the entertainers, has captivated audiences with renditions of Michael Buble, Tom Jones and a series of Las Vegas musicals; however, Mr Romeo's claim to fame may still be to come.

He plays the character of Magic in the soon-to-be-released movie, Blokes, all about the life of regular men in North Queensland.

Rick has lived all his life on the cane farm just near Home Hill, and it seems his jovial acts have caught the attention of the entertainment industry and found him, or as he agreed with the North Queensland Register, it might have been fate.

He was introduced to the stage in 1998, when his best friend and fellow Blokes actor Robert Zandonatti needed an extra performer for a production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

"I got bitten, and it is a drug once you have been on stage," Mr Romeo said.

Today, the 43-year-old is crazy about singing, acting and just entertaining people in general.

Rick's diverse talent was taken to new levels in Blokes, playing the character of Magic - a man running through a slew of women, yet has time to fish and drink beer with a pair of his best mates.

"I never expected to be in the movie," he said.

That is just why Rick has been so perfect in front of the camera.

Blokes is about everyday people and as Rick said, "Anyone that does a Gulf trip will know how to relate to Blokes".

"Every bloke will identify with it."

So how does Rick describe himself?

"When people ask, I say I am a cane farmer with extended activities."

He also loves to sing - as is evident in this picture of Rick cutting cane the way his father did half a century ago.

But perhaps he was just excited.

After all, the cane farm had just recorded 40mm for the new year - the first rain to fall since Easter.
