Modern technoloy aids terrorists to carry out plot

2/12/2008 12:00:00 AM

Mumbai is awash with contradictoy rumours about last week's terrorist attack. One mystery is how the terrorists communicated with each other. It has been widely reported the gang kept in touch with each other using Blackberries and called masterminds in Pakistan on satellite phones. In a tantalising echo of Australia's Haneef affair, one rumour doing the rounds on Sunday was that SIM cards issued by foreign telephone companies had been found with terrorists after they were shot dead.

However, there are other apparently credible accounts that there was no electronic communication between the terrorists. According to this theory the "electronic silence" was a savvy tactical move that helped the terrorist evade hundreds of crack commandos inside the Taj Mahal for two-and a half days

Some exotic characters have also been linked to the terrorists. One is Dawood Ibrahim, a notorious Indian gangster believed to be hiding in Karachi. Some accounts say he is the owner of merchant vessel used by the terrorists to get to India.

Dawood has been branded a "global terrorist" for his alleged involvement in previous attacks but is accused of many other crimes including cricket match fixing.

If Interpol can't catch him, it might be a part of the story that's hard to verify.
